Bruce Nauman

Bruce Nauman is known for this work in neon. He often uses well known phrases or words that contradict each other in his pieces. This can particularly be seen in One Hundred Live and Die.

One section of the Field Guide is Image, from this section I chose:
"'There is no better proof of the elegance of a typeface than obfuscating its content' prove this statement in an appropriate manner."
For this project I have decided to look at different famous and well-known phrases and change the typeface to see if it changes how the viewer perceives it.

Merel Karhof

Merel Karhof mainly works in product design. I looked at three of her projects which are closely linked. In Fossils of Barking, Karhof took 31 elements, including lamposts and signs, from the streets of Barking, East London to make 31 3D prints.

The prints were then used in Plates for Barking on restaurant plates and in Chair for Barking to decorate a park chair for public use. Merel Karhof used the prints that she made and integrated them back into the local community of where they came from.

CONTEXT

To start the BA Art and Design course, we were given 'A Field Guide' which contains a selection of proposals as a starting point for projects. In the Context section of the Field Guide, I chose the following:

"'A small print on a mailbox becomes something really precious when you remove all the noise around it and isolate it from it's setting.' Explore familiar or alien surroundings by isolating, documenting and displaying anything you think will create a new awareness of the landscape."

I went out into Bourneville and noticed the contrast between the 'OPEN' signs and the warning tape at the entrance of Cadbury World and the swimming baths. I decided to use this feeling of crowd control and bureaucracy to see how I could affect people around me by taping around items.
